During a 2 week workshop with Nic Bourquin (OnLabs founder and lead designer), myself and 26 other designers were prompted to create a daily news publication.
The process was interesting:
9AM: Decide on article/content
10AM: Present sketches and direction
11:30AM: Spreads to production group
NOON:Printed and distributed
All spreads designed in collaboration with Augusto Piccio
1. The cover (first 2 images below), was for Issue No.3. This issues main article focused on the Chinese New Year, which this year is the year of the black dragon. The second feature article was about Facebook status updates. Taking into consideration these two topics, AUgusto Piccio (my design partner for this project) and I decided to use authentic Chinese dragon hats for the New Year parade. The captions next to each head relate to the person underneath the mask, and their most recent Facebook updates. The bar on the bottom is the Chinese symbol for three (issue number three).
2. The following spread discusses Tebow, a football player for the Denver Broncos who has recently created quite the stir due to his religious habits while on the football field. The image is a photograph of a spread from the bible (related to the references in the original article), with the original article about Tebow in place of the normal bible text. Photographed on a football field.
3. The day of the SOPA protests, the internet shut down. The article discusses how SOPA would affect the way we communicate and learn as well as Americas response to the prospective act. The images grow in intensity as the spread reads from right to left, showing how this problem would get worse over time, censoring more online content everyday. Eventually the copy becomes impossible to read, making a comment on the reversal of our freedom to become the authors and curators of our lives (via the internet), if SOPA were to pass.
4. The final article discusses Phillips choice to bring their factories back to the Netherlands from China. This decision will be more efficient for the company, and create additional jobs for the Dutch. The article has 5 sections, each of which we described using a logo. As Phillips is beginning by moving their razor factories back to the homeland, there is a strong visual cue in the right page of the spread hinting at its importance in the bigger picture.
